Hi, remember me? It’s been a while since I’ve been here but I’m hoping to be here more. Writing has always been very therapeutic for me.
So, “the best kind of cancer” has been the odd, but strangely comforting way folks are keeping me positive about my diagnosis: Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. What I thought was a bad case of pneumonia turned out to be a mass on my right lung. It was filling my lung and the area around my heart with fluid, leaving me breathless and sending me into coughing fits that caused people to turn away in disgust. I don’t blame them. Even I was grossing myself out!
I’ve spent the past week in the hospital getting that fluid drained, which requires a startling amount of needle prodding and x-raying. As you can see, those things turn me into a sniveling ninny.
Oh, and the extra 11 pounds that have managed to stealthily creep their way into my cheeks? Doctors have reassured me those are simply a side-effect of all the fluids they’ve pumped into me before surgery. So it IS safe to eat something. In fact, it’s encouraged. Strongly. Ms Sanchez, please eat something already!
I’ve already had my pity party. No one was invited. Now I’m turning my attention to taking it one day at a time. The nurses make it easy by writing my daily goals on the blackboard in my room.
I don’t mean to brag, but I am far surpassing these goals on a daily basis. It’s the Filipino in me.
I’m not ready for visitors just yet, and besides I’ll probably be out shortly. I’ll likely begin my first chemotherapy treatment soon. I’ll finally get to see if my man truly believes that I would be beautiful even if I was bald :).

Every time i go to the diagnostic clinic out here, I am sure to carry around my “profile” packet. That thing contains all sorts of fun stuff like:
– my chartings
– my ultrasounds (they’re not just for women anymore!)
– bloodwork results
– anemia plots
– visit records
It’s kind of a big folder. But it goes everywhere with me – even in my backpack, which I always keep on me (work, drives, etc).
HOW ARE YOU HANDLING THE NEEDLES WITHOUT A FOLDER?!?!
Every time I get blood pans, I need me my folder – for it is also capable of blocking the sight of someone sticking me with a piece of hollowed out metal and drainingfluidfrommeeeeeohmygod..!… >_<
It's very versatile, as folders go.
Are you a hand-breaker perhaps? Mrs. Juainez (takes my blood) had to change me to chair-holding, as her hands couldn't take my super strong grip. I mean, I lift. So it's understandable.
Hang in there Jess! And anyway, you'll be able to find out what it would be like if you were a blonde, a redhead, or even an emo hipster with blue hair. Thankfully, yours will grow back in due time 🙂

Dear Jessica,
so sorry to read that you have NHL. I to have NHL. I was diagnosed in 2003, had one relapse in 2005, and have been in remission ever since. Remember being bald is beautiful. I didn’t do the wig thing. I wore bandanas and a ball cap. Really don’t know what to say, other than have faith in your doctors. Please feel free to email me. I truly know what you are going through. I would really love to speak with you. May God bless.

My dad had the same cancer. And I am so lucky and happy to say I still have him with me to this day. He was diagnosed my freshman year at UCF and it was really hard not to be there as much as I could’ve been. But at the same time there isn’t much I could’ve done. He went through all his chemo and radiation and is now in remission for over a year and a half. It really is the “best kind of cancer” because its treatable and beatable. Stay strong! It’ll all get better.

Jessica, so sorry to hear about your cancer. I am a lung cancer survivor, and am right now, in the middle of chemotherapy for stage three ovarian cancer. I was diagnosed before the holidays. So I can say, going bald was difficult, but I have two great wigs and a lot of rockin hats and scarves. I was lucky in that I haven’t lost my eyebrows or eyelashes which is cool. I have a long way to go with my treatments until the end of May. I won’t sugarcoat it for you. It’s not easy, but you can get through it with positive thinking, faith, and a great support system. I look forward to reading your blogs, and I will keep you in my prayers.

I wish you all the best. You are a brave woman and the channel 6 community will be supporting you all the way. Attitude is the key. Continue to be strong and keep your sense of humor. I once had to have my lower lip reattached to my face.. I made a lot of Mick Jagger jokes. I told everyone if they owned a convertible I wouldn’t be able to ride with them because I would end up beating my to death! LOL But it helped me cope and keep a positive outlook. You will get through this and those who care about you will be there through it all.
Hang in there!

There are a lot of people pulling for you, and we all hope that you make a full and speedy recovery.

My husband had the same kind of cancer. He was misdiagnosed for a year. It was a shock because he was in great shape. They say that’s why they never suspected cancer. He was 50 at the time. We beat cancer as a family. As for the baldness, He didn’t lose all of his hair. He could have done a buzz cut and you would have never known but he went all in and shaved his head. Don’t force it it may not fall out. It looks like you have excellent care so you will be fine. We are prating for you. The key is mental strength. Next time you want to have a pity party invite survivors and family. We’ll get you through it.

I wasn’t going to reply….but here I go. I have just passed my ONE YEAR CANCER FREE of NH L in February. I just want to encourage you. Ah, yes. “The best kind of cancer”….when I was told that I wanted to THROW. UP. The best kind? Is NO kind. But alas….these are the times and environment we live in. I rocked the bald head…even turning 40 and being bald. Are you kidding me? While my faith was rocked….it sure has been strengthened. Stay positive and lean on HIM and HIS WORD!! I’ll be praying for you. In Orlando, we are very blessed with two outstanding cancer fighting and winning facilities. Fight the fight! Game on. Warrior mode. Jessica, a colleague of mine sent me your post and I immediately knew I had to reach out. Girl, I’ve been there with almost everything you’re describing. I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in May 2012 (days before me and my husband’s 1 year anniversary). Now almost a year later, I am done with chemo and radiation and awaiting what I hope to be my last PET scan results for a while. That sneaky Hodgkin’s gets you when you least expect, for me it felt like right when I was coming of age and ramping up, and usually it’s totally out of the blue. If I can give you a bit of advice from the other end of it – make sure to take your time to adjust, you will forever have a new “normal”. There were times early on that I felt overwhelmed by encouragement, and then others time when I was just straight out overwhelmed. I recommend blogging to keep everyone in the loop. It helped me tremendously. You can read up on my story here: allievtakesonthebigc.com I am very open about all my experiences, in hope that I can help others that deal with this type of life changing and life threating reality. I wish you all the best and please feel free to reach out with any questions. We’re all survivors of something, we were just asked to make our triumph a little more public and a bit earlier than I know I would have expected. Sincerely, Allie V.

I was diagnosed with the same cancer in October 2011. After 6 treatments of 5 days each treatment in the hospital I was declared in remission. It wasn’t fun but it certainly wasn’t the end of the world. It just too precious time. I hope that you are being treated by MD Anderson. They were the BEST.
Prayers to you and best of luck.

Jess, in your first post you wrote “I’ll finally get to see if my man truly believes that I would be beautiful even if I was bald.” Obviously you know now the answer to be a resounding yes, with or without make-up, with or without your trademark smile. Keep fighting, keep believing. We’re ALL behind you! ¡Abrazos fuertes! Vaya con Dios. 🙂
